I did know that we owe our existence to the vegetarian, teetotal cyclist Arnold Hills.

Not only was he all of those things, but he actively campaigned to convince others to emulate him.

The Canning Town link I've known about for years. There's a little plot named after him on the Newham Way to commemorate it. He loved the Eastend did old Gandhi and they loved him from the sounds of it.
